There is a deck in Legacy that is called Aggro Loam (or Loam Aggro), although ‘aggro’ is really a misnomer. It is really an attrition-based deck, that tries to lock the opponent out of their spells with Chalice of the Void and Wasteland (in combination with Life from the Loam), develops card advantage with Liliana of the Veil and Dark Confidant, and closes the game out fast with Knight of the Reliquary, or slowly with Punishing Fire.
While I am saving up for the Legacy version, I wanted to give this deck a try in Modern; after all most of the essential cards (apart from the land base) are legal there. However, I did make a few changes. First of all, I replaced Chalice of the Void, which isn’t as great in Modern as in Legacy, with discard spells. Second, although Dark Confidant is a reliable source of card advantage, it gets killed more often in Modern; therefore I opted for Tasigur, the Golden Fang instead.
The deck that I discuss in the deck tech video is my first attempt, but there are many ways I could have built this deck. This version focuses on attrition with Smallpox, but I could have also gone for a value-based approach with Siege Rhino, or even for a true aggro deck with more creatures and Wilt-Leaf Liege.
It will take a lot of testing to determine what works best, but I am happy with the initial test results. I intend to continue working on the deck, and will post an update when I have figured it out the best configuration.
