Daily Brew – Golgari Grind

Hey there, it’s Chuck with a new Daily Brew!
I am going for a new style Golgari Midrange. I’ve been trying to strike a balance between casting cost and power level given the colors, because so many of these decks just try to play the best cards in Standard, and I don’t feel like that is the correct approach. We want to play creatures that do work, and answer powerful cards in the format.
The deck tech video explains why I chose what I chose, and I don’t want to double up on information. Here is the beginning decklist for you, and I will be expanding on this in coming weeks as well.

Golgari Grind

Creatures: (26) (26)
Experiment One
Deadly Recluse
Sylvan Caryatid
Courser of Kruphix
Boon Satyr
Reaper of the Wilds
Polukranos, World Eater
Arbor Colossus

Instants: (6) (6)
Devour Flesh
Abrupt Decay
Hero’s Downfall

Enchantments: (3) (3)
Whip of Erebos
Bow of Nylea

Planeswalkers (2) (2)
Vraska, the Unseen

Land: (24)
10 Forest
Swamp
Golgari Guildgate
Overgrown Tomb
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
Sideboard: (15) (15)
Pithing Needle
Skylasher
Mistcutter Hydra
Hero’s Downfall
Golgari Charm
Bile Blight

So to go into my sideboard choices, as this is very important I believe. The reasons I picked these cards is for the big Netdeck answers. For Esper and American Control, we have the pithing Needle, Skylashers and Misty Hydras, these are all great against the control matchup, as the Needle can shut down the walkers, and even if it gets detention sphere’d, we have the Golgari Charms to get it back. The Lashers and Hydras can’t be countered, and they have pro blue, which gives those decks real problems. The Bile Blight, Needle, and Golgari Charms are very useful in the mono black matchups for getting rid of Pack Rat. And the R/G Monsters matchup, we bring in the extra Downfalls to try to remove their creatures as fast as possible!

I hope you enjoy the series!
Chuck
